Scott Merz, PhD

Dr. Mertz is an entrepreneurial professional with 35 years of experience in technology innovation and executive management in the medical device field. His PhD focused on a closed loop control system for a medical device, and he successfully developed a de novo extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system that was approved by the FDA. He has worked in the CEO role for several startups, has raised Angel, Venture, and Strategic investment capital, and has negotiated the sale of four companies. He has worked with the FDA on precedent-setting device clearances and has established IDE trials. He led a strategic partnership with Medtronic and has developed and brought to market 8 FDA cleared medical products. Furthermore, while developing the ECMO system at MC3 Cardiopulmonary, he contributed to idea conception, research and product development, and led the transformation from research and development company to a medical device manufacturer, by restructuring the company with private and strategic investment. He negotiated and managed the aquisition of MC3 Cardiopulmonary by Medtronic in 2024.
